Brad’s Knee Rehab 2022

This is a summary blog of social media posts and videos I’m doing on the Primal Holistic Health FB page about my rehab journey for a serious Mountain Biking accident I had in January 2022.

To summarise what I’ve done for those that know a little anatomy, I’ve done 4 significant things.
– Ruptured ACL
– Torn / Strained MCL
– Tibial plateau bruise
– Medial Meniscus complex tear

I felt it was the best approach I could take for my mind, to be able to document this whole thing, keep myself accountable, expose people to the Primal Holistic Health approach, and help people in similar situations.

KNEE REHAB Day 90 – MOUNTAIN BIKE INJURY

MOVEMENT PROGRAM #8

This will probably be the last full video that I’ll create showing my rehab journey as I’ve come in extremely long way in a short space of time. 90 days!
The speed of my recovery I know is certainly indicative of my Primal Approach and I’m pretty damn happy with the results. It’s been really great to really test what I do professionally on myself… to make sure it all really works!
As I mentioned in the video, I’ll be releasing a Primal App in the near future and plan to create detailed premium programs to help people rehabilitate things like I have in record time and save you money in the process of surgery and if you’re unable to afford seeing someone like myself regularly one on one.

FRESH FROM THE ACCIDENT

KNEE REHAB Day 2 – MOUNTAIN BIKE INJURY

NO ICE!

Documenting my rehab…

  • Finished RICE protocol very soon after returning home and have been following and ANTI ICE (MELT, MEAT) approach since.
  • Used CBD oil last night for sleep. Worked really well.
  • Knee is very swollen and sore. It’s not just a small tweak with some inflammation.
  • I had a new friend who is a Physio come to my house and assess me. It’s so swollen and sore right now, it’s impossible to know what’s going on. The suggestion is to go get an MRI.See you on my next visit when I get a scan!

KNEE REHAB Day 4 – MOUNTAIN BIKE INJURY

PROGRESSION

Great progression in the last couple of days. Less pain. Certainly can’t extend my leg all the way but getting closer to knowing what’s happening inside my knee and what to do as the next step.

Other things I mention:

  • Doctor visit and MRI referral
  • No ice or pain meds
  • CBD oil and sleep
  • Muscles being over used that I’m stretching and muscles being under used that I’m strengthening.

KNEE REHAB Day 5 – MOUNTAIN BIKE INJURY

MRI

Just got an MRI on my right knee. I’ve had MRI’s twice before. Once on my brain and the others on my lower back and on the same right knee.

If you’ve never had a scan before, know that you have to be as still as possible and prepare for loudness! It basically sounds like loud jackhammers going nuts for 15 minutes… But I turned that into a thrash metal concert in my mind instead 🤘🎸

Actually, just like the machine was scanning my knee, I was scanning my body from head to toe doing a Vipassana meditation. I also included a mantra that I kept repeating “my right knee is intact. I can heal everything”.

The outcome I want is that I have either strained muscle or sprained ligaments to the extreme, and that all of my ligaments are intact and bones fracture free.

We’ll see what the result is. Today or tomorrow.

MOVEMENT PROGRAM #1

My current Movement program.

Here’s some insight into how I am choosing to move my body at the moment with the goal of activating muscles that I under use and stretching and mobilising muscles that I use too much of at the moment. Some pro tips on how to get a good cardio work out when you can’t use your legs and some equipment I’d highly recommend.

NMS (Neuro Muscular Stimulation) AT FLOCRYO

If you’ve been watching me recently on my stories showing a small device contracting my muscles for me, this experience with James Bermingham of FloCryo is that little device I’ve got, on steroids!

KNEE REHAB Day 12B – MOUNTAIN BIKE INJURY

LOCALISED CRYOTHERAPY AT FLOCRYO

I’m back again at FloCryo. This time to try out localised cryotherapy on my knee. Instead of standing in a chamber, I can sit down and have a wand moved back and forth across my knee for approximately 12 minutes at -150°C.

To be honest after a couple of weeks of staying away from any cold therapy, I was wondering how this was going to go, and if this was going to be the antithesis result of what I had just spent 30 minutes doing prior with NMS (see previous video).

But I’ll have to say, after doing both of these therapies, I walked out with greater range of motion at the knee and less pain for sure.

I’m still putting a lot of time into mobility and balance. My body is compensating so much to avoid putting force on my right knee that my body is crying out for help so this session is all about stretches and mobilisations.

COMFREY or KNITBONE – THE MAGIC MEDICINAL SHRUB

I’d never heard of Comfrey this until this month when a client of mine that snapped his knee from martial arts said it was a go to for him in helping his bones mend. (Thanks Leon and Cat!)

Then Bex’s great mate Celine who has damaged both her knees repeated the same information and thoughfully brought this over for me today!

On the weekend the soap dispenser in the hotel was even called Comfrey soap! Ha!

So who has used this before and what do you do with it?

“Comfrey has a centuries-old tradition as a medicinal plant. Today, multiple randomized controlled trials have demonstrated the efficacy and safety of comfrey preparations for the topical treatment of pain, inflammation and swelling of muscles and joints in degenerative arthritis, acute myalgia in the back, sprains, contusions and strains after sports injuries and accidents, also in children aged 3 or 4 and over.” (Wikipedia)
It’s also illegal I hear in some countries.

KNEE REHAB Day 27 – MOUNTAIN BIKE INJURY

CHIROPRACTIC CARE

My journey into holistic health and taking responsibility for my health started when I broke my back in my teenage years bodyboarding. I was in pain for several years with an on diagnosed fracture of my lowest bone in my lumbar spine called the L5. My health forever changed when I discovered chiropractic care, got an X-Ray and discovered what was really going on.

Over the years I have had irregular treatments using chiropractic and osteopathy, but for the last three years since I’ve lived on the Sunshine Coast I have been getting weekly adjustments with Ben Phillips of Noosa Junction Chiropractic.

Although there are times where I hate Ben (just joking mate!) his adjustments of my spine have been an integral part of keeping me healthy and pain-free. Especially lately when I am compensating so much because of the inability to walk on my right foot.

Today I’m experiencing a metaphysical / energetic session with Celeste Dowden, a good mate of our here on The Sunshine Coast that has a long relationship with the devine and has a unique therapy combining Reiki and unique intuitive abilities she possesses. Her history of an early innate gift combined with her ongoing studies in Reiki, astrology, numerology, palmistry and more, allows her to have a unique flare to how she works with people.

KNEE REHAB Day 29 – MOUNTAIN BIKE INJURY

EMS (Electro Muscular Stimulation) UNIT FOR REDUCING SWELLING AND ACTIVATING MUSCLES

I’ve been using this device for a month now and highly recommend it. After watching these two videos:

spoken by two Physiotherapists in the USA names Kelly Starrett and Gary Reinl, and then buying Gary’s book called Iced!: The Illusionary Treatment Option, I decided to avoid the overused RICE protocol (Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation) that I learnt in University for dealing with swelling and injuries, and replaced it with active recovery, involving movement and eliminating Ice and Compression in particular.

I then discovered the world of portable EMS (Elector Muscular Stimulation) units to purposely contract my muscles surrounding the knee to encourage bloodflow and speed up lymphatic drainage to remove debris. I had frequently seen elite Crossfit Athletes using them in Sydney when I used to work at one years ago, but though they were nothing more than good marketing. Damn I was wrong! The analogy that Gary uses is, ‘Groceries in, garbage out’, and thats exactly what they do.

KNEE REHAB Day 30 – MOUNTAIN BIKE INJURY

THE VIBRATIONAL CHAIR!

Last week I finished off my session at the Lightbridge Clinic and spent 30 minutes lying on a ‘zero gravity chair’ that took me off to another universe! It was the most amazing auditory / kinaesthetic healing experience I had in a long time.

Lee-Anne Borham explains the science of a unique service they offer called ‘Bio-Tuning’ to help a person find their current personal frequency that is the crossover of where they’re sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous system’s activate in response to initial auditory work she does with you. I haven’t experienced this yet, but looking forward to it!

Just experiencing a generic audio track and lying on the chair was pretty mind blowing. Highly recommend. Especially if you’re stressed, or your wanting to improve your sleep. I sleep pretty well but would love to be able to consistently sleep deeper for longer. KNEE REHAB Day 30B – MOUNTAIN BIKE INJURY

THE PHOTOBIOMODULATION CHAMBER & MOLECULAR HYDROGEN

At the Lightbridge Clinic today I’m trialling a PBM Chamber (Red Light Therapy Chamber) to experience the effects of 5 different frequencies of red light over my entire body instead of just over my knee.

After finally getting to see an orthopaedic surgeon and getting clarification about my tibial plateau not being fractured, but instead a really bad bruise, I’ve finally been able to put some force through my leg and start stretching it and it’s still bloody awesome!

KNEE REHAB Day 34 – MOUNTAIN BIKE INJURY

NEW TOYS: THE ISOTIB & NORDIC BAR

Since getting confirmation that my tibial plateau is not fractured, I’ve been putting more force into my knee, and increasing the amount of stretching and stability work I’m doing.

I just bought two devices that I think are going to really help me speed up this process. Already, I feel a big difference with my leg strength just from using the first piece of equipment.

INTUITIVE KINESIOLOGY

Next up in my energetic journey of healing, has been experiencing the unique services of Celine Lapointe, a health pro master of 35 years with enough certifications and experience to sink a ship!

What the main work that she is busy for on the Sunshine Coast is massage, her brand of intuitive applied kinesiology is what she is passionate about the most and wishes to do more of. I experienced it recently and really loved it!

The key messages that came through for our session was that I personally need to rest way more, and get reconnected with more with nature, meditation and now that I can walk again, more time at the beach!

Injuring my knee so severely has certainly forced me to slow down, but even within this time I’ve still been busy in body and mind every day moving towards speeding my healing up as fast as possible. Whilst this has been amazing, it’s possibly also negated the higher purpose of getting me to rest my weary body.

KNEE REHAB Day 58 – MOUNTAIN BIKE INJURY

NEURO ACOUSTIC AUDIO

Back at the Lightbridge Clinic again to visit Lee-Anne Borham and experience her services within the clinic within the realms of Neuro Acoustic Audio.

This video has been filmed over two weeks. One more week to go.

The first time I visited Lee-Anne, she did a short 12 minute test to gauge my bodies ability to transfer between dominant autonomic nervous system‘s. The two branches being called sympathetic and parasympathetic Which you will learn more about within the video.

Quite simply, the balance between the ratio of use of these two nervous systems for the majority of people is completely swayed to the over-use of the sympathetic nervous system leading to overproduction of hormones like cortisol and adrenaline, leading to fatigue and dis-ease.

By using software called by Bio Tuning software, we are determining the frequency that my body likes to be in to elicit the stimulation of the preferred parasympathetic nervous system, so I can tap into this at any time of the day and increase the speed of my healing of my knee.

KNEE REHAB Day 65 – MOUNTAIN BIKE INJURY

MOVEMENT PROGRAM #6

My knee strength has improved in leaps and bounds since last week when I received my new toy! The Total Trainer. Since then I’ve been comfortable riding a bike on the flat and going up a hill, and I’m actually able to squat now with my hips below my knees.
